David Tapp

A broken detective who traded the badge for a gun to hunt the man behind the traps.

Detective David Tapp is a central figure in the early investigations into the serial killer known as Jigsaw, serving as the primary antagonist-turned-obsessive hunter during the events of the first two films. Initially a dedicated member of the police force, his career and psyche are shattered when he fails to save his partner from one of John Kramer's elaborate traps. This failure drives him down a dark path where he abandons the law to become a vigilante who believes the only way to stop Jigsaw is to kill every participant in his games.

Lore & Background

Following his discharge from the force due to erratic behavior, Tapp operated outside the law, tracking down anyone connected to Kramer's organization. He successfully hunted down several of Jigsaw's accomplices, including Amanda Young and Zep Hindle, often killing them in brutal fashion before they could be apprehended by authorities. His relentless pursuit culminated in a final confrontation with John Kramer himself, where Tapp was forced into a trap designed not to test his will to live, but to force him to confront the reality of his own descent into madness.

In Their Own Story

The rain slicked the alleyway floor as Tapp raised his weapon, his breath ragged in the cold night air. He had spent years chasing ghosts, but tonight he found the man who haunted them all. The trap was simple, yet cruel: a choice between saving himself or letting the killer escape. As the mechanism clicked into place, Tapp realized too late that Jigsaw never intended to kill him; the detective had been the test subject all along, forced to become the very monster he swore to destroy.

Reader's Guide

Jigsaw's organization was not a traditional criminal syndicate but rather a loose network of individuals John Kramer manipulated or recruited to carry out his 'games.' At the top stood John himself, who designed the traps and selected the victims based on their moral failings. His primary apprentice was Amanda Young, whom he trained for years, believing she could continue his work after his death. Other accomplices like Zep Hindle were often coerced or blackmailed into service rather than being true believers. These followers operated with varying degrees of autonomy but always under the strict philosophy that their actions were a form of twisted rehabilitation. However, internal conflict was inevitable; Amanda's psychological instability and Tapp's relentless hunting created fractures in the group. The hierarchy collapsed due to betrayal and trauma. Amanda eventually turned on John, seeking revenge for her past abuse, while Tapp systematically dismantled the organization by killing its members one by one. Ultimately, the lack of a unified command structure meant that once John fell, his followers were left vulnerable and easily destroyed.
